What camps should I go to?
This is a question we get a lot and one that takes time and effort to answer. The simple answer is “go to the camps of the schools that are seriously recruiting you”. Unfortunately that’s easy to suggest, but not easy to determine.
So how do you know who is seriously recruiting you? Well, the best way is you ask!
One of the biggest services we provide for clients is answering that exact question, You can do it yourself or maybe get help from your high school coach. Remember, just because you received a piece of mail from a school does not mean they are recruiting you.
Colleges have camps and “invite” student athletes for 2 reasons:
- To make money
- To evaluate prospects.
They want a lot of kids to come to their camp….so they can make money. So what they do is mass mail tons of kids or drop off brochures at the high school. Then, the ones they are really serious about, they call the prospect or high school coach, hand write them a letter or visit them at their school.
So if you are wondering if college xxxxxx is serious about you and want to figure out if they want you as a player or just your money, then ask yourself, “did they call or visit? If not, the answer is no, at least you know where you stand, for now!
Now that’s not the end of the story and you not should determine what camps to attend based solely on that information.
But what should you do?
You need exposure….. it is the only way to get recruited. You might be perfect for them, but they may not be aware you exist.
So now what?
Well, you start by contacting the schools directly, like we do for our clients. You have to get a coach to watch your film and provide feedback and then you must ask the tough question …. “Coach, are you REALLY interested in me?”
If you can get them to watch your video and provide feedback and you’re willing to ask the tough question, most honest coaches will be straight with you.
The hard part is getting connected with college coaches. Mostly, because they get hundreds of these types of calls daily. It can really help to have someone with connections, like your coach, who can get a coach on the phone.
